Febraury Book Club Review: Confessions of A Domestic Failure

Oh my goodness friends, this book was such a blessing ( #Soblessed ha ) to read! I'm so thankful that one of you recommended it and the rest of you wanted to join in. I personally love that not all of you are Mom's so hearing your side of things was super interesting and I enjoy hearing your feedback

SynopsisFrom the creator of The Honest Toddler comes a fiction debut sure to be a must-listen for moms everywhere. T here are good moms and bad moms - and then there are hot-mess moms. Introducing Ashley Keller, career girl turned stay-at-home mom who's trying to navigate the world of Pinterest-perfect, Facebook-fantastic, and Instagram-impressive mommies but failing miserably.

When Ashley gets the opportunity to participate in the Motherhood Better boot camp run by the mommy-blog-empire maven she idolizes, she jumps at the chance to become the perfect mom she's always wanted to be. But will she fly high or flop? With her razor-sharp wit and knack for finding the funny in everything, Bunmi Laditan creates a character as flawed and lovable as Bridget Jones or Becky Bloomwood while hilariously lambasting the societal pressures placed upon every new mother. At its heart, Ashley's story reminds moms that there's no way to be perfect - but many ways to be great.
Thoughts: Right from the first few pages, I literally was laughing out loud while reading this novel as it wasn't just a book to read for this month but gave me such a great escape of the chaos that surrounds me as a work at home Mom. You don't feel alone at all when you read this book and I know that many of us who are working from home or being a stay at home Mom truly feel alone at times. Bunmi does such a great job at creating and crafting what we all really think of as being a Mom, what our expectations are and what reality is. Her fictional character speaks to all of us.

One thought that really resonated me was when Ashely was talking about being a parent is truly a 24/7 job. We don't get breaks as a stay at home parent. Our spouses can come home at after work, take their shoes off and relax for a few minutes. We don't get that as we often juggle chores of laundry, cleaning, picking up, organizing, making sure the kids homework is done, bath time, cooking dinner/breakfast/lunch, grocery shopping, organizing play dates or various activities for our kids... and somehow on a given day make about 5 minutes for ourselves.

What did you think of the novel? Did you relate to it? Did you laugh?
Did you think that despite this being a fictional character, could this happen to me too?

Will you be joining me?!

  1. I ended up reading this and liking it. I was incredibly amused because it did show the different type of parenting out there. I am definitely more like Ashley. I don't have it all together and I hate to cook.

  2. Oh my! This book was amazing!! Pretty sure I resonated with a lot of it and I was definitely laughing within the first few pages! I think the most relatable thing was when Ashley went to Emily’s for the finale as Ashley talked about just missing her husband and daughter. She had begged for time away for awhile and once she got it she just wished she could see them all again. I feel that way a lot especially with having the new little! I love having time away but it breaks my heart at the same time! Overall there were some aspects that I relate to as a working mom of 4 and hubby being in 2nd shift I do everything so the outburst from Ashley and Emily at the end hit home on top of Ashley’s plane outburst! FYI during that part I couldn’t help but think “Get it girl!” Haha! Would love to see another one based on her being a mom of two! We all need that laugh in our lives!

  10. This sounds like a good book. I can't relate to motherhood, wasn't lucky enough to be a mom, but I'm sure it is familiar to most moms.

  17. I often joke with my husband that Saturday is my off day. It never works like that does it? Being mom is a full time around the clock job. But it's great, pinterest fails and all!

And one of the comments implies Ashley can't cook - which is still me!! Thankfully hubby loves cooking or we might have to live on cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
