When I first visited Ireland, 9 years ago, I loved learning about Dublin and what the city had to offer. I was sad that we weren’t venture out to the country side because many of you said the view was astounding.
This past September, Zach and I decided to take our siblings to visit Ireland again but rent a car to visit the neighboring towns. Specifically, I wanted to see The Cliffs Of Mohr.
The Cliffs Of Mohr are truly one of the most breath taking and beautiful nature spot in all of Ireland. They are also one of the most tourist sites in Ireland as well and receive a million visitors each year.
The Cliffs are located in the southwestern edge of the Burren region in County Clare, Ireland. The Cliffs are 509 feet above the Atlantic Ocean and offer one of the most incredible views you can ever set your eyes on. The consist mainly of beds of sandstone and Namurain shale. The oldest rocks are found at the bottom of the cliffs ( sadly you can’t go down there ).
Once you visit the parking lot, it’s about 6 euros per person however if you go after 7pm like we did, it is free. There are local shops at the base of the cliff where you can purchase various odds and end items plus a visitor center and bathroom.
There are several paths to take and there is even one that has a pathway with vertical slate rocks around the border to keep you from being blown over the side or worse, fall over the cliff. The best spot to get up close and personal with the cliffs is to take the path to the left to do so but be mindful of the very windy area!
3 Reasons To Visit
- The Views– Clearly you go for the incredible views and it is shortly anything of incredible ones. It’s almost difficult to describe the beauty that the Cliffs Of Mohr hold, the nature around these magnificent cliffs and the secrets and stories it holds year after year.
- Media Marvel – If you’re a huge film buff like myself, you’ll recognize these iconic cliffs from many movies such as Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, The Princess Bride, Leap Year and more! It’s one thing to see it from the comfort of your own home but it’s another to see actually see it in person.
- The Overall Views – The sights and sounds are what really bring people to this magical place. Listening to the birds tweet even at sunset seems majestic. You can even feel the spray of the waves come up near the tower as the wind picks up and gives you a little rain shower from time to time.
What To Wear
I opted to wear a leather jacket, long sleeve shirt, jeans and boots which I’m super glad I did because not only is extremely windy but it can also be muddy as well. The weather is also unpredictable so you want to wear layers because it does get pretty chilly. I’d even suggest a hat like a beanie of some kind to keep your ears and head warm but not one like mine which almost blew off several times! opps!
Have you ever been to the Cliffs of Mohr? What was your experience like?
