I admit I’m not a huge gardener and really rely on the support and help of my husband who grew up on a farm. When we moved into our home almost two years ago, we knew eventually we wanted to have a garden outside and an herb garden inside. Because Zach took over our garden outside, I opted to try herb gardening myself. I admit, I’m a little nervous but we’ll see how it goes!
What does someone need to grow herbs indoors?
This is a huge part of growing herbs inside. You want to find a location that offers about 6 hours of bright sunlight. If you’re unsure, look for windows that are southwest facing, a corner with two windows one facing south and the other west or supplement with an HID grow light if your home doesn’t get enough natural light.
Potting Soil :
If you’re looking for the perfect mix for growing your plants inside you want to look at what top of potting soil you’ll be using. Look for a powerhouse blend of organic growing medium that is loose and drains well. You can purchase a commercial mix or even make your own.
There are many herbs that can be started from seeds. Decide which herbs you wish to grow and read up to find out how they are best planted. I decided to grow some of my favorites including Mint, Basil, Parsley, Oregano, and Rosemary. I found several pot options HERE including some that are even foolproof- meaning that they self water themselves! Woohoo once less thing to worry about!
I’ll keep you all posted on how herb gardening goes for us! I can’t wait to use some of these for some fun recipes I’m excited to make for my family and neighbors! It’s actually not as difficult as I thought.
